Support » Plugin: Jetpack by WordPress.com » Are Jetpack / Photon cached images deleted if plugin is uninstalled?

    Hi
I am developing a new website on our test server before going live.
Some of the images I have uploaded need re-uploading as they are too large in size.
Q1 – Am I right that if I reload the image on the test site then it doesn’t get changed on Photon because it thinks it is same as the original if it uses the same file name?
Q2 – If I uninstalled/ deleted the Jetpack plugin on the site then changed the images and reinstalled would this remove the cached images on the Photon CDN?

Q3 – If not – if I setup a new Jetpack account with a different email address – would this act as a ‘new install’ and recognise the new images?

Q5 – Or does JetPack / Photon work purely on the URL of the website?
So even if the Plugin has been deleted or the JetPack account changed – it will still use the old cached images

    Thanks!

Correct, you will need to upload the image with a new file name for Photon to notice.

If I uninstalled/ deleted the Jetpack plugin on the site then changed the images and reinstalled would this remove the cached images on the Photon CDN?

No, the only way to effectively remove them from Photo is to delete the original image inside WordPress while the plugin is active.

If not – if I setup a new Jetpack account with a different email address – would this act as a ‘new install’ and recognise the new images?

No, since Photon is tied to the site, not the account.

Or does JetPack / Photon work purely on the URL of the website?

    Correct, yes.

Alternatively to all the above, if you contact us via https://jetpack.com/contact-support/?rel=support with the full photon URL of the image you wish to purge, we can do that for you. 🙂

    Hi James
Thanks for the detailed reply. Appreciate it.
Also for the offer to purge the image.
The site is actually on our testing server. So when we go live with it – it will have a new URL.
The easiest thing in this case will be to uninstall Photon / JetPack on the live site. Delete and change the images then install Jetpack. This way Jetpack / Photon won’t have a record of any images under the new URL.
It’s an artwork website so the final result could involve changing quite a few images and that would be unfair to your support team, when I can solve it in house.
Your clarifications have made the process much clearer in my mind and I thank you for that.

    Best wishes

    Happy to help!

You actually won’t need to do this. Photon images are attached to the site, specifically the URL, not anything else. So, once you launch the site under its new URL, Photon will cache all of the images on _that_ site. 🙂

    James
    You are a star.
    Really appreciate the support.
    Thx
    Andrew
