Using the SG Optimizer plugin, I’ve optimized images and turned on webp formats.
However, I’m not seeing webp used on background images, which are the biggest thing on the page and failing for the Largest Contentful Paint measurement.
Are background images (specified via css) also optimized and available in webp format?
If not, any suggestions on how to help reduce LCP for these big background images?

    Thanks,
    Jannette

    Hey @cliffmama

We optimize all images that are uploaded via WordPress Media uploader.

If the images are manually uploaded or if they are part of the theme/plugin files, then we don’t optimize them.

    Thanks Stanimir,
So that means files uploaded to the NextGen Gallery plugin also won’t get optimized and put in webp format? I can upload them to media library, then import into NextGen Gallery, but they still end up residing in /wp-content/gallery/. It would be great if all the images in our photo gallery were optimized and in webp format. Any ability to do that, or feature plans to optimize additional folders of images?

    Thanks,
    Jannette

    Hey @cliffmama

We optimize the images uploaded to the media gallery by using hooks that are called when an image is uploaded.

I don’t think that NextGen gallery plugin calls these hooks, so the images uploaded via their plugin won’t be optimized.
