    Hi,

    Such crawl errors are new to us. We are getting errors of the pages of the archives of tags, product categories, blog categories etc. I have ticked “Apply noindex to every second or later archive page?” as well as no index for Category Archives, Tag Archives, Author Archives, Date Archives, Search Pages and Attachment Pages.

    What else am I missing?

    Hi, @bukers,

    Could you tell us what the errors are? An URL to the page(s) in question would also greatly help! Thanks 🙂

    Hey Sybre,

    Many thanks for the timely reply. I am sorry for my delay response. We are at a very different time zone here.

    Oops the original reply is held for moderation for 72 hours. I have posted too many error links.

    I shall post two typical ones here to see if it’ll pass:

    Hi, @bukers,

    Thanks for the links! I love tea 🙂

    Alright, so if you click on the crawl error, you can switch to the “Linked from” tab, as shown in the image below:

    Crawl errors

    Inspect those pages their sources (CTRL+U on Windows), and see if the URL is found there.
    If the URL is found, then you need to remove it from the page or exchange it for a working one.
    If the URL isn’t found on any of the pages, then it’s an old (migration) error, and you can mark it as fixed (blue button).

    When all errors are marked as fixed, you’d have to wait for a while for new ones to appear, if any. Repeat the process as deemed necessary for the best user experience.

    404 links don’t necessarily hurt rankings, but it does hurt the visitor’s navigational experience. It’s a good practice to have a good linking structure, and Google’s Search Console helps you with that 🙂

    Something else…
    Aside from that, I’m a bit worried about your theme supplementing 404 pages after the header for its own version while loading a custom page.
    In doing so, 404 pages aren’t recognized by plugins like The SEO Framework for two reasons:

    1. is_404() isn’t working as intended.
    2. $wp_query->post_count isn’t working as intended.

    This isn’t a big issue that needs to be resolved directly, as WordPress correctly sends out a 404 header with the HTTP request. But, you might wish to reach out to the theme author to see why expected WordPress’ functionality is altered.

    N.B. this might not be the theme, but a 404-page oriented plugin doing so instead.

    Hello @cybr,

    You must be one of the most helpful script writers around. I shall follow your advice and see what time can heal.

    We have actually redirected all the product, category, page and post URLs to those in the current site. Those error pages Google found are archive pages that we did not know even exist.

    As for the 404 page template, thank you for taking time to look into it. It is a custom 404 page plugin. It is just a minor cosmetic thing that we think may improve the user experience. If it affects even the $wp_query->post_count, we can discuss to revert to the original WP 404 setup.

    Again, many thanks for such a great followup

    Hi, @bukers,

    No problem at all 🙂

    Once more, don’t worry too much the $wp_query->post_count issue. It’s a technical aspect which doesn’t hurt user experience nor affects SEO.
