Archive : Page not found

I hope someone can help me here. I just installed worpress and been playing around with it getting familiar with things and for some reason when I click the archives link in the side panel it takes me to a 404 page not found. This is not a 404 kubrick page. I changed my permalink structure to the folowing
/%monthnum%/%day%/%year%/%postname%/
now when I click archive it looks for this link
http://websiteaddress/10/2005/
if manually type in the browser address bar http://websiteaddress/10/00/2005/
you can see the archive. If I change the permalink to
/%monthnum%/%year%/%postname%/ the archive link works.
I tried turning off permalink then deleting the .hta file and recreating it then turning permalinks back on but it stil gives me the 404 error page. anyone have any ideas?
