I would like to see future releases of WordPress output headers as application/xhtml+xml instead of text/html. This is the correct format for XHTML 1.1 documents. Notice that the beta version of the W3C validator now complains about it, as it should.
Until IE supports that type, it’s just not going to happen. Even IE7 cannot display application/xhtml+xml MIME types. Firefox has no issues, although it’s pickier in that mode and most webpages would produce “not well formed” errors.
You’d get better results by asking for an option to allow you to set your own type.
