• The design category under appearances in one of my websites does not appear. The web designer did not create access to it as he did with one of my other sites. I cannot get a response from the designer. Is there any way to obtain this without him doing it from his end. It allows me to change the header slideshow which is very dated.
    Thanks so much,
    Brett

What functionality does the design category hold, as in your other sites?

Thee isn’t a Design option in WordPress 3.4.2 and there hasn’t been one since WordPress 2.7(?). Are you referring to the Appearance menu item?

Yes the appearance menu item. Sorry it is called Design Settings not design. See below. It functions to change the header slideshow. Here is the link to the site where I do have that option. http://veterinarydentistry.net/

    Slide shows

Create and manage your slide shows.

    Slideshow Shortcode Actions
    4 Column – Home Page [slideshow alias=”4-column-home-page” ] Edit | Delete
Default Slide Show [slideshow alias=”default-slide-show” ] Edit | Delete
    vet-slideshow [slideshow alias=”vet-slideshow” ] Edit | Delete
    Courses [slideshow alias=”courses” ] Edit | Delete

    Top Graphics

Optional graphic elements designed to appear on sub-pages below the main navigation. Interchangable with slide shows in page headers.

    Top Graphic Actions
Default Top Graphic Edit | Delete
    AVMA NEWSLETTER Edit | Delete
Blog Top Graphic Override (from save file)
    Add new Top Graphic

    Sidebars

Create sidebars which you can include in layouts, insert with shortcodes and add widgets to from the “Widgets” page.

    Sidebar Shortcode Actions
    Footer – Top [sidebar alias=”footer-top-widget-area” ] Edit | Delete
Default Sidebar [sidebar alias=”default-sidebar” ] Override (from save file)
Blog Sidebar [sidebar alias=”blog-sidebar” ] Override (from save file)
Header Widget Area [sidebar alias=”header-widget-area” ] Override (from save file)
Footer – Bottom [sidebar alias=”footer-bottom-widget-area” ] Override (from save file)
    Add new Sidebar

    Layouts
    Page Headers

Select the elements to use in your header including slide shows, top graphics, menus, top content area and showcase content. The headers created here are available to add to any page layout.

    Header Actions
Home Page Header Edit | Delete
    Minimal Header Edit | Delete
    AVMA NEWSLETTER Edit | Delete
    Trial Header Edit | Delete
Default Page Header Override (from save file)
Default Blog Header Override (from save file)
    Add new Header

    Page Footers

Configure the options for the content and layout of page footers. The footers created here are available to add to page layouts.

    Footer Actions
    post footer Edit | Delete
Default Footer Override (from save file)
    Add new Footer

    Page Layouts

Create and manage the templates available for your content.

    Template Actions
Home Page Layout Edit | Delete
    newsletter Edit | Delete
Right Sidebar Layout Override (from save file)
Left Sidebar Layout Override (from save file)
Full Width Layout Override (from save file)
    Add new Layout

That option/functionality is being added by the theme on the site you linked to above. And as it’s a custom theme, there’s not a lot we can offer in the way of help.
