I installed 2.04 WP on the server (Centos with Bluequartz) for me and my customers .. but suddenly ....

httpd is showing me a lot of zombies the last 2 or 3 days
when checking with ps -aux I see apache ........ "[host] <defunct>"
checking pstree -lp I see that httpd is creating them

    httpd is |-httpd(9773)-+-host(10896)
    | | |-host(10966)
    | | |-host(11015)
    | | |-host(11117)
    | | |-host(11518)
    | | |-host(11591)
    | | |-host(11709)
    | | |-host(11873)

    top shows me:
382 zombie processes at this time.

Of course I can restart the httpd process (which is does itself every night) to solve it, but I want to see the cause and why it's happening ..

I want to know; what are zombies, what are they doing and does it hurt?

if it's not something okay how to get rid of it ?

It probably due to 'Wordpress Weblog' software as I see the live - hits an checking the zombie counting with TOP
and right now the server is hit by GoogleBot ..
so with every hit a zombie proces is created ..

    Can anyone else confirm/verify etc?

oh it's not that I cannot solve the zombies to disappear
    /etc/rc.d/init.d/httpd restart does the job

but zombies should not be there. When Googling they say it's bad programming / bad software ..

There must be something inside WordPress that reacts on (probably requests on Googlebots / Yahoo-bots or any bot)

    http://www.xxxxxx.com - - [10/Aug/2006:14:22:56 +0200] "GET /playground/2006/08/04/css-troubles/ HTTP/1.0" 200 33150 "-" "Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Yahoo! Slurp; http://help.yahoo.com/help/us/ysearch/slurp)"

    http://www.xxxxxxxxxx.com - - [10/Aug/2006:14:32:02 +0200] "GET /playground/2005/08/ HTTP/1.0" 200 48109 "-" "NutchCVS/0.8-dev (Nutch; http://lucene.apache.org/nutch/bot.html; nutch-agent@lucene.apache.org)"

and here it's just creating a zombie within Linux ..
and that's someting I want to know. Why is it happening and how to prevent it from happening.
    It's something in WordPress.

The link wasn't about killing zombies, it was about finding parents. Ah well...

    It's something in WordPress.
