Support » Plugin: Zotpress » Any way to overcome the 100 citations limit in ZOTPRESS shortcode?

    Hi Katie,

I do use the Zotpress shortcode in my website OPK (http://opistobranquis.info/en) to display a list of publications for a given animal species description, for instance: Tritonia striata (http://opistobranquis.info/en/wstgo).

For most species this runs just well (but for the sort order in Chrome web browser, I already opened a case in another thread), but I came across with a problem with a species that has well over 100 publications, as Aeolidia papillosa (http://opistobranquis.info/en/mW30v).

It is documented that the Zotpress shortcode has a parameter to limit the displayed citations, with a maximum value of 100. This limit was not in Zotpress v5.x, but it does exist in v6.x. I assume this is not to overload Zotero servers, but I really need to display all the citations, not the first 100.

Is there a way to extend or overcome that limit? I have peered the plugin source code but could not find the point where this limit (ZP_LIMIT) is applied.

Zotpresslib shortcode overcomes this by using Ajax pagination, and this would be an acceptable solution if applied to Zotpress shortcode.

Could you have a look at this? Thank you very much in advance.

@tzucker thank you very much for all this testing.

In case this may help you, every Zotpress version you might need is downloadable from this page (https://wordpress.org/plugins/zotpress/developers/). It is important to note that there is an important functionality change from version 6.0, so it’s of no purpose installing Zotpress versions earlier than 6.0.

Every WordPress version is downloadable from here (https://wordpress.org/download/release-archive/). WordPress 4.5.3 or 4.5.4 would be an interesting try to know if it is the WordPress core update to version 4.6 what provoked the problem, as Katie suggests.

    Thanks I’ll check on Monday.

I realized that without a full backup I can’t check older versions of the WP core. I will instead consult with my son who has contributed to the core and may be able to set up a test site for me (my site is on his server instance).

    Katie,

By the way, as the [zotpresslib] provides the right functionality (properly paginated bibliography), would you consider adding a “tag” value to the “type” parameter of this shortcode (in addition to “dropdown” and “searchbar”) that returns the results for a given “tag” without further interaction (no need for an interface either) with the user ? It could be a solution to the present problem, that seems “stuck” because nobody modified anything, but [zotpress] shortcode only returns 50 results.

Thank you very much for your support and dedication !

    Katie,

Anyway to resolve this would be great. I am unclear as to Miquel’s comment, but I assume you know what he is talking about. I have said elsewhere, but I will reiterate, I am a died in the wool EndNote user and only use Zotero because of Zotpress. I would gladly pay for this plugin if it would help.

    Tom

P.S. I still have been unable to get back to an earlier version of WordPress due to the permissions on the webserver. So no new testing.

Forgot to add, does anyone know the ETA of the ability to use searches instead of collections or tags?

    Hi Katie,

Reverting back to an earlier version of WordPress is not an option for us.

Using multiple shortcodes to display our entire collection by year wouldn’t be a workaround for the 50 reference limit, as we have over 100 pubs a year.

Like ztucker, we are Endnote users with a Worpress website, and only use Zotero because of your Zotpress plugin.

I hope you will be able to figure this out for all of us soon!
I appreciate all your work with Zotpress!

Update: I downloaded WP 4.5 and tried the latest version of Zotpress, and the problem is gone! I also double-checked WP 4.6.1 with the latest version of Zotpress, and it’s broken. It looks like a core feature of WP was changed (or broken) in 4.6.*, which Zotpress requires but is not something I can fix, so I will seek out help from the WP core team …

Update 2: After doing some sleuthing, it looks like WP core switched to a different request library. I was able to find some info in the forums and I believe it’s fixed! Please let me know and re-open if not. Check out 6.1.6. You may need to clear the cache after updating.

The browser cache or wp cache? If the latter, how does one do that?

@tzucker Katie means Zotpress cache (Admin page – Zotpress – Accounts – Clear Cache).

    @kseaborn, you’re did a GREAT job !!

It worked just fine, it loads the citations in 50 record batches but they load just fine, sorted and all, until the total number is reached. This is the solution, thank you very much !!

    Yes! So relieved.

    Works for me too. Thanks!!

Same here. Cleared the cache, and we were back off to the races. Thanks, again, so much!
