Any ideas how to make form results show up on map?

I know just enough about Worpress to be dangerous!

I am building a website (WordPress with Buddypress, bbpress) and would like the following:

I need a map of the US (not a detailed road map.) I want this map to show a running total in each state (maybe later counties) of users that selected a certain field on a form.

For instance…let’s say they fill out a member form and when they submit it, the text inside the state they select will go from 0 to 1.

Any ideas how to begin to approach this? A plug-in would be awesome, but I could also hire out the programming if necessary.
