• I’ve got a new blog focused on a specific vertical industry. I’ve been using Google Analytics and it’s been exciting to watch the numbers crawl up.

I’d like to hear from others with similar sites on these two questions.

    1. What should I be trying to hit as good numbers for my various stats like Bounce Rate? What’s normal/high on a blog of this kind? What about session time? Or page views to visits?

    2. I would like to exercise the goals feature of Google analytics. I figured I could use it on comments as that’s something I want to encourage. What are other goals that are worthwhile on a blog?

    Thanks,

  • I’m no expert on this, but I setup a goal just to see how many people came in to the site, then clicked on my “About” page, then clicked elsewhere on the site. Here is how I interpret this:

it tells me that they came in (duh) and whether or not they wanted to know more about me or the site (shows interest). But it also says whether or not they continued to read after they read my about page. (ie, they liked what they found, etc.) So I use this as a way to play around and find what is most interesting to the readers.

Now, that said: I don’t take it too seriously…I’m using the random quotes plugin for my About page and it pulls up a random bio each time (hit refresh a few times). I mock about pages pretty bad. 🙂 But you get the idea.

I read somewhere where a guy commands the user like “click on my computer page” or “click this now!” and tried that on my about page. I used a goal to track how many people came in, checked out the about page, then clicked the link to my computer page – you can then interpret what is and isn’t working.

You can also set dollar amounts, but since so few of us sell actual product, it would be hard to monetize particular clicks like categories or posts. hth.
