• Hi all,

This morning I have been having all sorts of trouble updating plugins through admin. It’s over 3 sites on 2 different hosts. Some just can’t update and hang and I get the scheduled maintenance page.

The third site had real trouble just loading the updates page and I see the message :Warning: An unexpected error occurred. Something may be wrong with WordPress.org or this server’s configuration. If you continue to have problems, please try the support forums. (WordPress could not establish a secure connection to WordPress.org. Please contact your server administrator.) in /home/theevery/public_html/wp-admin/includes/plugin-install.php on line 77:”

I didn’t see this message on the other sites, but it’s pretty coincidental that I’ve had so much trouble updating plugins on 3 sites at the same time, normally no problems.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks

  • Do all three sites use any of the same plugins and/or themes?

One site could have had an issue with a core update (perform an manual update).

One site could have had an issue with a theme and current version of WP or plugins. (switch to default theme to test).

One site could have an issue with one or more plugins. Deactivate all, activate one at a time, each time testing site.

Any combination of these issues could be occuring on any of the sites.

A most common problem is not disabling all server cache while performing site maintenance.

Thanks for that, yes there are the same plugins on these sites, though there are also different ones, and they do use 3 different themes.

I haven’t heard about disabling server cache though so definitely didn’t do that, though I do have them on 2 different hosts. Don’t know how to do that, will have to find out.

If it’s not a plugin, then ask host. If is a plugin, review which and see how to turn off prior to site maintenance.

Just contacted my host they tell me there’s no server caching that I need to disable. (Hostgator).

You didn’t mean to clear the cache on caching plugins did you?

Yes, but a host can cache a site also.
