• Well, I used to get blitzed with SPAM constantly. Now I don’t. Only legit comments get through. I can pretty much stop there, but…

I’m really picky about installing plugins. I prefer less plugins and less bloat. So I resorted to using some referrer tricks, and blacklisting IP’s and URL’s, and email addresses. None of which did anything. It was like throwing a grape at a Rhino.

When I installed Anti-Spam a while back I felt good that it was just running one or two files. The second file is just a few lines of JavaScript. Less code, means less bloat, and less opportunity for an unscrupulous plugin author to hide some nefarious code. Thankfully, the code is clean and there’s no hanky panky going on in there.

It’s been several months and it’s still working. Which is surprising. I assumed spammers would have figured out a way to beat this by now, to find its blind spot, but it’s still stomping my SPAM like an elephant.

I wonder what all those other SPAM plugins are doing with their bloated files and ten thousand configuration settings? Why install those monstrosities (which I was guilty of doing) when this nimble plugin is able to get the job done effectively?

  • Thank you very much for this great feedback.
You are a great writer 🙂

I wonder what all those other SPAM plugins are doing with their bloated files and ten thousand configuration settings?

I wanted to make Anti-spam plugin as clean as possible. Only block of spam matters. All other things (like zillion options or blocked spam counter) are not important and it could bloat the code to huge sizes. When I saw that Anti-spam plugin was more effective sometimes than other popular plugins with thousands lines of code I was pretty surprised 🙂

The idea of the plugin “to block all spam automatically, effectively and in the easiest way” was pretty utopian. I did not believed for 100% that 150 lines of code will stop spam bots. But I decided to try. When after few months of testing the plugin on my sites and getting 0 spam comments I understood that the plugin is working and it is ready to be shared with the world.
The blocking algorithm was not changed too much during last year and it blocks spam pretty good. Now I know the spam bots behavior and I added some traps into the plugin what blocks spam even more effectively. Spam bots are very complex and automated now, but I used their automatic property against them 🙂

Which is surprising. I assumed spammers would have figured out a way to beat this by now, to find its blind spot

Many users are afraid that if Anti-spam plugin will become more popular and spammers will crack it.
Even if spammers will find out the trick of the Anti-spam plugin and even if spammers will add rules specially for Anti-spam plugin I will just change the blocking algorithms and spammers will have to update the code of their bots again. Even if spammers will try to fight with the Anti-spam plugin – it is dead end for them because I can update the plugin faster than they do. Each iteration and adding new rules for each version of the plugin will bloat their code, but the code of Anti-spam plugin will stay pretty clean. Fighting with spam its infinite war and now Anti-spam plugin is winning. I am supporting Anti-spam plugin and I like it because I use it on all my sites. The Anti-spam plugin is my vision of “real anti-spam solution”.

So keep updated and I hope you will forget about spam completely.
And also submit feedbacks if you will have problems with spam in future.
    Have a nice day.
