Allowing contributor role to set featured images?

I have dug around for the answer but can’t seem to find it.

I need to allow the contributor role the ability to set a featured image when publishing content to wordpress.

Can I do this without a plugin or modifying the wp code?

If not…is there a plugin someone can recommend?
