    Dear David,

Hope you’re doing well during these trying times.

Just an inquiry: how feasible is, in your opinion, to have a robust solution where all thumbnails generated by WP go into their own folder, like /uploads/thumbs?

A cursory research landed me only into this: Fr Thumbnails Folder, but after a quick-test it isn’t working well enough for me, as there’re now disappearing thumbnails along other plugins (e.g. WP Advanced Bulk Edit).

The use-case is keeping separated our rather large image gallery as the “master files”, from the prolific stuff generated by WP (lately I’m eyeing device-dependent imagery, WebP, etc.). This can easier backup organization and keep stuff tidier in general in the long run.

Thanks in advance for your input!
    Alex

Thanks for your good wishes and for your question.

I am deeply skeptical of an attempt to separate thumbnails (and intermediate sizes in general) from their full-size companions. WordPress has dozens of API calls that rely on the “attached file” value, assuming that all related files are in the same location. As you must know there are many plugins and themes that make a similar assumption. Don’t forget the “scaled” full-size images:

Introducing handling of big images in WordPress 5.3

It might be better to implement some sort of filtered backup based on the values of the “attached file” and “original_image” meta keys.

In the first week after I discovered WordPress I do remember thinking about a more “logical” directory scheme for Media Library items. In retrospect I am relieved that I never acted on it.

Thanks for asking and for your continued interest in MLA.
