If the network URL changes and the sites in the network are dependent upon the network domain all the sites may break! This is because the sites still refer to the original URL for the network that no longer exists.

Example of how the network may change and break
    Original setup:
    Network URL: mynet.com
    Site URL 1: site1.mynet.com
    Site URL 2: mycustomsite.com << Domain mapped

    Changing Network URL
    Network URL: newnet.com
Site URL 1: site1.mynet.com << No longer works as mynet.com does not exist
Site URL 2: mycustomsite.com << Should still work fine as it does not rely on network URL
