Support » Plugin: WP Dashboard Notes » All My Notes Just Disappeared

  • I went to my site a few minutes ago, and all of my notes were missing. The “Add Note” button also was gone.

Very distressing. I had a lot of to do lists piled up there.

    Any suggestions?

If the notes and ‘Add note’ button are both gone it is very likely that the plugin is not activated. Did this happen after the last update of yesterday? Maybe something went wrong on your host during the upgrade which caused the plugin to deactivate.

Please verify and let me know!

I checked the plugins list and it says “network active”

I haven’t tested this plugin for networks, could you please try it on a single site install / activate the plugin per site?

Also, where do you look for notes? Is this on a single site or on the main multisite dashboard?

I apparently can’t install it on just one of the sites on the network. I have to install it on the network panel, then activate it under individual sites.

I use it on the two sites under the same umbrella install. I have always seen the notes individually on the different sites. It has worked fine for many months. Until now.

Do you see the notes when you activate the plugin under a single site of the multisite?

This change in behaviour is likely related to the latest update which is for performance overall. I think a multisite uses a different identifier for the dashboard page on MS. The related change which is causing this:

Lines 64 and 67 are added in order to only load the plugin when on the dashboard page.

If you want to help make this compatible with MS you can give the following a try ~through FTP ONLY~
    if ( is_admin() ) die( $pagenow );

Only do this if you also know how to undo it, it will completely block the admin out from being used when that code is active. Implement that on line 62, under the global $pagenow;.

This will show which ID is used on MS for the dashboard page, which will then need to be added to the plugin in order for it to work.

Make sure to remove the code when you’ve copied/noted the ID of the dashboard page (be sure you’re viewing the dashboard page, otherwise it will display a different page ID).

    Let me know!

I was encountering the same issue — had this plugin installed on Multisite for a client for > 2 years, and on recent WP Core update, the notes vamoosed, along with the ‘add note’ control.

Disabling the plugin in the network control panel, and re-enabling on a site-specific basis via each site’s dashboard did the trick, and the notes are back.

I’d definitely still call this a bug that should probably be fixed if possible – but at least the workaround seems to be painless.

    Hi Tim,

Its unlikely related to the latest WP update, but rather the latest plugin update.
Have you tried my above instructions? (@bogey hasn’t replied with his results on that yet).

Thanks for letting me know the single site activation workaround works!

Re bug; I don’t officially support MS so its not officially a bug. I’ll do my best to help out here, but can’t guarantee it for MS 😉
