Support » Fixing WordPress » All Categories not showing in Categories widget

  • I’ve just set up my site. When I created the Categories widget, only about 25 of my over 100 different Categories showed up in the list, even though I have plenty of posts attached to those other Categories. Is there a way to get those other Categories to appear? Thanks!

The page I need help with: [log in to see the link]

Are any of them subcategories? Can you send a link to an archive of one of the ones that’s not listed?

Optionally, there are some Advanced Taxonomy widgets in the plugins repo that can give you a LOT more options for how they’re shown etc.

No, none are subcategories — or at least not intentionally.

This is an example of the problem, I guess. Here’s a link that shows the Category “Fashion” in the internal Category list. But Fashion does NOT appear in my widget:

    https://thatispricelessblog.com/wp-admin/edit-tags.php?taxonomy=category&paged=6

You can see that it has no Posts assigned to it. But when I search for “Fashion” it brings up 2 posts that have it attached as one of their Categories, as you can see here:

    https://thatispricelessblog.com/?s=fashion

So I guess the first question is why these posts are not being counted as being in the Fashion category. I wonder if there was some disconnect when I transferred my blog over from Blogger.

    Thoughts?

The reason they’re not showing in the widget is that they THINK they have no posts. Why they think that, I don’t know, because I can obviously see lots of posts here: https://thatispricelessblog.com/category/fashion/

In the admin area, when looking at the term, it’ll show a 0 on the right. If you click the 0 it’ll take you to the admin list for posts. Does it show none, or does it shown what I see on the front end?

I can’t see inside your admin area, but that is really odd. As a developer I can’t even think of how that’s possible. Maybe try taking one of those post OUT of that category, save, then put it back in and save again? Maybe only one side knows what category it’s in.

    Hey, that worked!

I did what you said with just one Fashion post and it found all of them. In other words, my Admin went from showing 0 in Fashion to 136. And now Fashion shows up in the Widget.

Now all I have to do is do that for all 300 or so of the missing categories! But if I pick them off a few at a time, I’ll get there.

    Thanks for your help!

Woo! I’m a genius and I didn’t even know it! Try this then, go to Settings → Permalinks and simply hit save, no changes. That MIGHT reset all of them at once. Maybe not, but it won’t HURT anything.

No luck, but it was worth a try — thanks. One thing I’m noticing is anytime I choose a category for a new post, it seems to find all the old ones and also add that category to the widget. So at the very least, I will slowly accrue my old categories with each new post.

May the wind be ever at your back. Unless it’s hot out, and then a gentle breeze to the face.
