Albums are suddenly missing?

My client has succesfully made albums with images and added them with short codes on the pages. All went well..

but this weekend, all the albums disappeared from the admin (and the pages were showing the shortcodes only). Images were still in the upload folder though..

I managed to restore a back-up but what can be the cause of the missing albums?
