    WP 4.5.1
    Linux Apache
    PHP vers. 5.4+ (5.4.41 I think)

Since the latest wp 4.5.1 update, Akismet is stopping the editor from working. None of the buttons react (formatting, insert image, insert link, etc).

Ref. fuller description of the issue here on WP troubleshooting forum.

Have deactivated all plugins and then activated one at a time.

Akismet and Yoast cause this problem independently of one another.

So even with all plug-ins deactivated (except for Akismet), we still get this problem.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. As we’re happy to ditch Yoast, but not Akismet, as it is a great service.

What theme are you using? Is the editor broken if *just* Akismet is activated? All other reports of this so far have been due to other plugins or themes improperly loading their own version of jQuery or jQueryUI, but the problem doesn’t always appear when the bad plugin is active on its own.

    Using “Ariele”.
Yep, the editor is broken if just Akismet is activated.

We’re having the same issue with WP 4.5.1, Akismet 3.1.10, and an older theme called “Quare” from http://themeforest.net/item/quare-responsive-multipurpose-theme/3946101 and we’ve never used Yoast.

WP, Akismet, and Quare were working fine together until another admin updated it around 4/26 and then it let you type it up but you couldn’t do anything with images like Daniel has mentioned and when you save it wouldn’t show the text in the editor. You could see it in text view. I suspected a TinyMCE error and switched it out according to https://core.trac.wordpress.org/ticket/36545 but got nowhere so I deactivated all plugins and it was ok, and Akismet was the first I enabled and it went bad again.

I went ahead this AM and did a test install and here’s what I found:

    Default Install: Fine
Activate and Input Akismet Key: Fine
    Switch Theme to Quare: Error
    Deactivate Akismet: Fine
    Activate Akismet: Error
Kept Akismet and Switched Theme to 2016: Fine

Firebug returned this on each error:

Error: no such method ‘instance’ for menu widget instance
    http://andrewteg.com/wordpress/wp-admin/load-scripts.php?c=1&load%5B%5D=jquery-core,jquery-migrate,utils,jquery-ui-core,jquery-ui-widget,jquery-ui-mouse,jquery-ui-sortable,postbox,plupload&ver=4.5.1
    Line 2

Since I switched to Twenty Sixteen and left Akismet and it’s fine again, it’s definitely something with the theme and Akismet but they have been working well together for close to 2 years. The theme is not updated and we’re planning an update over the summer but can’t use Akismet until then. So FWIW, I installed Anitspam Bee on our live site and that works fine for us at least.

@andrew Tegenkamp: All evidence points towards a bug in Quare. You should contact the theme author.

@daniel: Ariele includes its own version of jQuery UI. You should contact the theme author about a fix.

We’re hearing from a lot of people that the issue is actually WP itself. Someone has done a clean install and seen the same issue occurring (apparently). And I’ve read similar things in other threads with ‘similar’ problems ever since WP 4.5.1

@christopher Finke – nup, the Ariele theme author has been ignoring communications from anyone and everyone for a couple years no from memory. Some clients just hang on to the theme because they can’t find a similar replacement that they like. But it was working fine together (Akismet and this theme) right up until the WP4.5.1

@andrew Tegencamp – thanks for that. Antispam Bee sounds great. If it’s working for you, we’ll give it a try and cross fingers

@andrew Tegencamp – excellent. Can confirm that Antispam Bee works perfect, no problems with either the theme or WP4.5.1. Have jumped ship to that plug-in now and doing it across all the others. Many Thanks
