Akismet error message- Your key appears to be invalid. Double check it

    I have hosting through netfirms. I installed WP. I tried to insall the Akismet plug-in. It says it needs a API key to activate it. I have an account and tried to input the plug-in. When I try I get the message that my key appears to be invalid and to double check it. I tried clearing my cache, deleting my history, etc, but nothing seems to work. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

    You’ve gotten your API key from wordpress.COM and Askimet still doesn’t recognize it? Did you copy and paste directly to rule out typos.

    I did copy and paste it. I did get my key from wordpress. 🙁 Not sure what’s up. Should I delete my WP account and resubscribe? Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it. 🙂

    Searching the forums may have helped as this has been discussed before.

    Get with your host. Either your host has disallowed using the php command fopen or they’ve blocked outbound port 80 connections. At the very least they need to whitelist akismet.com or rest.akismet.com so teh connection can be made.
