 * Hello,
 * I managed to create a single backup manually but since then (3 months) nothing
   works anymore – and I mean NOTHING:
    1. Can’t **backup** 2. Can’t **update**
   3. Can’t **uninstall**
 * My Akeeba version is: 1.0.3
 * When I try to backup I get: directory is not writable. I tried to change permissions
   to 0777 but they always go back automatically to 0775. The directory itself is
   the right one – it exists and I didn’t do any site moving or restoring.
 * Any idea how I could fix that?
 * Thanks!

 * Apparently the problem you have is not related to Akeeba Backup, but file/directory
   permissions and your host.
 * First, let’s tackle the uninstallation. Akeeba Backup is a WordPress plugin.
   Like all WordPress plugins all you have to do to uninstall it is delete the directory
   it installs in. In this case it’s wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupcore (the name
   of the directory could be different as it’s up to you or WordPress to define
   it, not us).
 * Then, let’s talk about updates. You can’t update because WordPress can’t write
   to the directory of the plugin. You probably have the same issue with other plugins.
   Changing the directory permissions is one way to work around the issue. The other
   way is downloading the plugin, extract the ZIP file locally and upload by FTP
   the files into the plugin’s directory, i.e. wp-content/plugins/akeebabackupcore(
   the name of the directory could be different as it’s up to you or WordPress to
   define it, not us).
 * Finally, the backup. As you have already said the problem is with permissions.
   Akeeba Backup _does not change the permissions_ of the backup directory. Your
   host or another plugin installed on your site does. Please ask your host. If
   they don’t change the permissions there’s an easy workaround to your problem
   which, by the way, it’s the _recommended, secure practice_ in our documentation.
   Create a new directory outside your we root (above public_html). Then go to the
   Configuration page of Akeeba Backup, find the Output Directory setting, click
   on the folder button next to it and browse into the directory you have created
   above public_html. Then click on Use, Save & Close and you’re ready to rock and
   roll.

 * Hello nikosdion,
 * Thank you for the ultra fast response!
 * 1. I see what you mean. I also learned something new: that a WP plug-in is a
   contained unit that is face to remove. I was not sure about it before.
 * 2. I tried to remove the akeebabackupcore dictionary with no success. I get permission
   issues. I can’t modify anything there.
 * 3. I do have the update issue with another plug in but the rest work just fine–
   this is strange
 * I will turn to my host and see what they say about it. I will keep you updated.
 * Thanks!

 * I think I have an idea at what is going on at your site. You have what we call“
   permissions hell”: some files/directories are owned by your web server user,
   some are owned by your FTP user. In the end of the day the permissions and ownerships
   are a mess.
 * Try removing Akeeba Backup’s directory by FTP first. If that fails, use your
   hosting control panel’s file manager. Then install Akeeba Backup through WordPress
   itself (not by FTP).

 * Issue solved:
    1. Tried removing Akeeba manually via FTP or cPanel – no go. 2.
   Contacted support – they made some magic with the permissions. Support wrote:“
   This was possibly file ownership as they also need to be set as well as permissions”–
   so oyu must be right with your theory. 3. Updated Akeeba from within WP – worked
   like a charm. 4. Other problematic plug-in could then also be updated
 * Funny – most plug-ins worked fine.
 * Sorry about bothering you with a non Akeeba relevant issue – but hey I learned
   on the way so it was not for nothing.
 * Have a great weekend!
