AI / AI Engine and Yoast not playing well

I have been trying the AI/AI Engine plugins out and I have the free Yoast plugin and I’ve noticed that when the AI app summarizes my post and posts it as a block I get a Yoast error: Updating failed. Could not update the meta value of _yoast_wpseo_focuskw in database.

My workaround is to deactivate Yoast, go back and save the post, come back and activate Yoast and then go and resave the article and make any other changes I want to make and all seems to be good.

This is just one idea for getting past the AI usage error conflict between AI Engine and Yost

Hello @folgerj,

I apologise for the conflict you experienced between Yoast SEO and AI Engine. Kindly retry the action and check the JavaScript console for errors whenever you encounter the error again. Also, have you completed the SEO data optimization in WordPress > Yoast SEO > Tools?

The error happens consistently (so it should make it easier…

So I did the summarize and it works but the save generated this error:

Post- api-fetch.min.js?ver…fe4dc1468d36c39b8:1 POST https://jeff-foliage.com/wp-json/wp/v2/posts/749?_locale=user 500 (Internal Server Error)

there was a plain english error at the top of the post page in wordpress: Updating failed. Could not update the meta value of _yoast_wpseo_focuskw in database.

I deactivated Yoast and saved the post and no error but I did get this message in the console:

jquery.min.js?ver=3.7.1:2 POST https://jeff-foliage.com/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php 400 (Bad Request)

The post even though the report showed an error, seems to have posted correctly the summarize: https://jeff-foliage.com/2026/04/19/finding-peak-fall-foliage/

Thanks for confirming. The 500 Internal Server Error tells us the save request is failing on the server, but the browser only reports the status code—not the PHP error that caused it. The _yoast_wpseo_focuskw message is the symptom rather than the root cause. Could you enable WordPress debugging, reproduce the issue once, and share the relevant entries from your debug.log (or your server’s PHP error log)? That should reveal what’s causing the REST API request to fail and whether it’s a compatibility issue between Yoast SEO 27.9 and the AI Engine plugin.

I noticed the AI Engine put out an update and now it save with no problems or at least no errors, so I will mark this resolved for now thanks for your assist…
