• Please i do not understand that GPL, can someone explain it to me?

I still simply do not understandy why are themes written from scratch licenced under GPL. Because they are using wordpress functions? So if I’m writting a program using GPL programming language and using it’s functions, my programm is automaticaly GPL?

And also – does it mean, that also all plugins MUST BE GPL, because they are using those functions as well?

Isn’t this bit against the goal to support developers? Many other CMS offer paid/gpl plugins and users can choose what they want and if they would like to pay.

I’m sure others may view GPL differently, but in my opinion, NO, using WP functions does not automatically make a theme GPL. I would guess people who write themes from scratch and make them GPL are doing it because they want to…not because the use of WP functions automatically requires it.

I found an article with a legal analysis of the “plugins must be GPL’d” claim (written by lawyers for a change):

    http://www.law.washington.edu/lct/swp/Law/derivative.html

It call such claims “absurd”. It’s a long article but it’s well worth a read.
