Sounds like some kind of custom redirect either in your htaccess code/file or done by something else like a plugin or theme or code in your theme’s functions.php file.
Eliminate BPS first by doing these BPS Troubleshooting steps > https://forum.ait-pro.com/forums/topic/read-me-first-free/#bps-free-general-troubleshooting
1. On the Security Modes page, click the Root Folder BulletProof Mode Deactivate button. See Custom Code Note if doing this step works.
2. On the Security Modes page, click the wp-admin Folder BulletProof Mode Deactivate button. See Custom Code Note if doing this step works.

Hmm I just tried upgrading 3 websites to WP 5.9 and these are the results below. My guess would be the WP API servers are overloaded right now.
WP 5.9 upgrade failed: 404 errors on 2 websites redirected from wp-admin to the frontend of the sites during the WP 5.9 upgrade.

On another website I see this:
Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute.
The website no longer loads and is stuck in maintenance mode.
Looks like I will need to manually install WP 5.9.

Thanks, I deactivated all htaccess files, then plugin and reactivated all back, I shall let you know if this happens back. We had no problem this morning updating to WP 5.9, but this was very early time in Spain.
Thank you!

3 of my websites are setup to do WP Automatic Updates and all 3 of them were successfully upgraded yesterday. This is probably some kind of problem with my web host or some other connectivity problem. It could still be that the WP API servers are overloaded right now though. Anyway it only takes 10 minutes to manually upgrade to WP 5.9. So no big deal.
Is the redirect problem still happening?
Thanks, I’m out of office now, so I can check tomorrow. We don’t have automatic updates (nor wordpress, nor plugins), we made them manually. Tomorrow I shall let you know if this persists, after doing what we made about deactivating all htaccess files, then plugin and reactivating all back. Thank you once more for your time and dedication 🙂
Good morning, the problem seems to be fixed, it didn´t happen anymore, so seems to be going well now 🙂
Thanks for your time and attention 😉
