  • Hi folks,
So I’ve got my wordpress on my home server, I want to create my own html and css for the pages on my blog, what is the best way to achieve this?
Do I need to create a theme and style it that way?
Should I be learning PHP first, if so does anyone have any good resources?

  • The whole point of WordPress is that you can build a site without having to know PHP, HTML, or CSS.
But if that’s what interests you, you can build a theme. It’s easiest if you start with one and modify it. But you can start from scratch.

Thanks Joy, I’m doing an 100 days of coding challenge and was looking to incorporate my WordPress blog into it.
I will look into the theme as you suggested.

You might want to look at some of the sites that offer online courses like udemy, linda,or shareskill. If you choice udemy watch the prices before you buy. One day the couse will be $300 and the next day it will be $9. I think Morten Rand-Hendriksen on Lynda is the best instructor but you have to purchase a membership to lynda to view his courses.

You’re getting great advice but if you want to choose/ prioritize I would learn CSS first. It will help with styling your website.

If you want a free route look at it should get you some of the basics. You can change the code in the tryit sections. Also, if you want to experiment try using google chrome or firefox developer tools. Just right-click on the sight and select Inspect. Microsoft also has this option but I think chrome and firefox are better. Try to master the developer tools in the browsers. It is well worth the time and effort to learn these tools.
