• I recently ran into a couple of situations where I wished I could have stopped comments on my blogs without having to lose any of the other settings. A recent comment flood attempt comes to mind.
Dougal came up with the wonderful Spammer Tar Pit plugin to temporarily stop the floods and that plugin gave me some ideas that I put together into another set of plugins.
The “Stop Comments” plugin temporarily turns off comments for your whole blog without affecting individual settings for each of the posts. In other words, if at some time you want to stop people from commenting on your blog for a certain period of time, simply activate this plugin and all comments are dropped with a polite message. Once you are ready to turn them on again, simply deactivate this plugin and you are done.
The “Take Down Blog” plugin is a one liner. If for some reason you want to prevent people from reaching your blog, just activate this plugin and your readers will get a polite message asking them to come back soon and nothing else. This could be further refined with html pages and such.
Both these plugins can be downloaded here. Installation is as simple as copying the contents of the zip file to your wp-content/plugins directory.
    Please leave comments and feedback.

  • Would the ‘Take Down Blog’ work while an upgrade was going on ?
As in, activate plugin, start upgrading, get the css in, make sure it all works etc then deactivate it ? If so that would be damn cool 🙂

Hmmm…that will need to be tested. I guess it would depend on how pervasive the upgrade process is. If nothing blows up in the includes in wp-settings.php, the plugin will work as expected.

I’m still trying to figure out a way to undo the damage done by the stop comments, in my case, the auto-close comments so I can edit again.

    mog,
I am not sure if what you are saying has anything to do with this plugin. This plugin makes no changes to the database at all. If you want to edit comments you should be able to just deactivate the plugin and everything should be back to normal.

There was a mistake in the plugin zip file which has been corrected. If you have downloaded this, please download and try again.
The commentsoff.php turns off comments while the blogoff.php turns off the blog. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I just downloaded and enabled the ‘comments off’ plugin, logged out, and now I can’t log back in! After entering the pw, the message displayed is ‘All comments have been turned off temporarily. Please try again later.’ Help!

Thanks, logged in after renaming the file. Maybe there’s some other way to disable all comments?
