  • I have created a site at genvines.com where I post location-specific information. Sometimes the posts will have many locations mentioned, and I get down to the county level in the US – there are 3000+ counties in the US. And the site covers info about the entire world.

I am currently tagging the posts with each of the locations mentioned. I think however that I chose wrong and should have used categories or custom taxonomies, but the thought in the beginning of managing thousands of categories was too daunting so I chose tags. But… eventually, I want to build subscriptions into the site, where people can subscribe to specific tags/categories. And in order for that to work effectively, I am realizing I really need to have a hierarchical structure.

So…I think I need to transfer these tags over to categories or custom taxonomies. But I really don’t know if that’s the right answer, or if there might be something else out there. What is the best way to manage thousands of categories? Is there a better way to do this? I don’t know a lot about how creating custom taxonomies work, so is that the better answer? I’d love any thoughts our opinions anyone might have. Thanks…
