This appears to be a common theme, but a few days ago I added the latest plugin to my wordpress site: https://www.glue-it.com/wp

However, I keep getting this error: “Error: The response is not a valid JSON response.” when trying to connect to adsense via the dashboard in adsense.

I then deactivated the old and no longer support adsense plugin to see if that was the issue – no change, same error.

I do still have hard coded adense adds on the pages – not sure if that is an issue or not.

Also, I have been using adsense for a number of years, so not a new account issue.

Thanks for reaching out. When you access your AdSense account directly at adsense.google.com using the same Google account which you’ve used to setup Site Kit are you able to view your account details, along with listed sites and other information? If so please share whether you can click on the “Sites” tab.

yes, I can login and have access to sites and see that I have one subdomain shown that is http://www.glue-it.com

ah, interesting is once pasted into this forum it is shown as http rather than https

I actually have both an http site with fixed html (still showing google ads) and a wordpress site at https with the plugin

Thanks for the update, everything sounds good from your AdSense setup based on your description. Your site is fully https from my side, with redirection in place for http traffic.

If the error you’re encounter remains please perform the following steps, which temporarily deactivates other plugins and switches to a default WordPress theme (for you only, as a logged in user).

    1. Install and activate the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin.
    2. Navigate to “Plugins > Health Check & Troubleshooting > Troubleshoot”.
    3. From the same screen click on the “Available Plugins” tab at the top right and then click on the “Enable” option next to “Site Kit by Google”
    4. Attempt to setup the AdSense module once more

You can exit troubleshooting mode afterwards.

Should you encounter the same error message please share your Site Health information privately using this form.

We’ve received your Site Health information, thanks for sharing. Can you share the following information so we can troubleshoot this further:

    1. You still encounter the “Error: The response is not a valid JSON response.” message, after checking using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin?
    2. What is the status of the domain name when you acess that site at adsense.google.com?

    • Error: The response is not a valid JSON response. – this error is still showing
    • Status of the domain on Sites>Overview is Ready

    Hi James,

Just checked again this am and same error: Error: The response is not a valid JSON response.

Checking adsense and it says the site is Ready

The pages are displaying ads and the popup ads are all showing.

So, everything appears fine except the WP dashboard adsense error

Also, site kit had updated overnight:
Site Kit by Google (from version 1.22.0 to 1.23.0)

Thanks for the update, very interesting. Looking at your site I see only a manually placed ad code. Do you recall how you inserted your existing ad code snippet?

I’m curious to know if you’re able to proceed after removing this snippet temporarily before connecting the AdSense module within Site Kit. After removing please ensure there is no AdSense snippet placed on your site, you can check from viewing your sites source code.

Hi James, I removed the adsense code, checked it was removed by viewing page code and then tried site kit again and still the same error.

Yesterday when I followed the troubleshooting process and sent the code in the form I noticed that the adsense plugin didn’t have the publisher code – it was empty, is that correct?

The AdSense plugin active looking at your Site Health information was new to me, so I can’t state how it works. Having said that the code snippet looks valid on your site, for the single ad unit.

The troubleshooting steps you’ve already undertaken using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin would have temporarily deactivated this plugin during AdSense module setup within Site Kit, which may indicate the issue lies elsewhere.

If it’s not too much trouble would it be possible for you to share a video of your experience while keeping your Chrome developer tools open, displaying any console errors? You can use a service such as Loom or RecordIt, or if preferred simply share via a Google Drive upload. If you prefer to share privately you can once again use the same form.

    Hi James,

I deactivated hummingbird as this appeared to be stopping onesignal from running. That has cleared up the significant errors. I then deactivated Site Kit and deleted it. Then added it back in and activated it.

The search console now works much faster and shows results very quickly. However, adsense has the same issues

Hopefully the shared video I sent a link to via the form has helped

Thanks for sharing. Unfortunately the video doesn’t seem available yet, with a “Publishing Pixels – Your download’s coming up” notice appearing and the video remaining greyed out.

If you have the video in a standard video format can you upload to Google drive and make it available, or check the Loom video?
