The layout (and appearance) is controlled by the CSS code – which is generally edited in a style.css file. But before you do any modifications to your theme, it’s highly recommended that you create a Child Theme — which will prevent all your changes from being erased when the theme or WP is updated. Then, you’ll enter the CSS changes in the child theme style.css. When you’ve at that point, someone can help you with the specifics, but do be aware that changing the width of one part of a page almost always involves changes to other parts and it’s not always that simple.

Ok, I’ve done that (backed it up). Where do I edit it in the css?

you can use some theme that do it for you automatically . There are a lot . Search them and pick a good one .
