Currently on my main blog page, there seems to be a pre-set character length for the post excerpts that appear on the page.

I would like to be able to manually set the post excerpt length using the “< more >” tag on the “Edit Post” pages instead.

How can I deactivate the pre-set excerpt length?

In your child theme’s function.php, add this:

function blue_planet_custom_excerpt_length($length){
return 55;
}

function blue_planet_excerpt_readmore($more){
return ' ' . '[…]';
}

55 is the default excerpt length of WordPress. Likewise, read more text is also reverted back to WP defaults.
