 * I created an extended post type and applied it to pages so I could create a custom
page title. It works fine, but I was just looking at styling it and noted that
the field for “Additional CSS Classes” which has a default value in it, doesn’t
appear in the HTML code on the front end. Is there some extra step I need to
take to enable the CSS class so I can format the field?

 * Additional CSS Classes affects the form in wp-admin and the form shortcode. It
doesn’t effect variable output. Output / CSS would depend on your front end template.

 * Why would I need a template for an extended post type? Isn’t the template the
   existing post type?

 * Yes, the template would be the existing post type, likely following the template
   hierarchy: [https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/basics/template-hierarchy/](https://developer.wordpress.org/themes/basics/template-hierarchy/)
 * You’ll have to edit whatever template you’re using if you want to add CSS classes
   around a custom field.
