Adding WooCommerce to existing WP site

    Any advice on how to deal with issues arising from adding WooCommerce to an existing WP site? (Status report below)

    I want to add WooCommerce to our existing WP site (which I had no part in creating or maintaining), and I’m running into some odd problems, possibly due to some custom settings on the existing site.

    The two most bedeviling issues at present are (a) order notification emails are not working and (b) when displaying categories on the main shop page, the products within a chosen category do not display properly.

    For the first one, I have checked email settings in Woo, checked in spam folders, tried different e-mail addresses, including a gmail one. It looks like we have WP Mail SMTP Lite installed, but I’m hesitant to fuss with settings so as not to break anything with the main site. (The notifications for the main site go to our communications team, but I want the WooCommerce notifications to come to me.)

    For (b), when I select a product category, I was expecting to see a grid of products within that category, but what I see is just a paragraph containing unformatted text with all of the text that should be on the page. (I had tried a clean install of Apache/WP/WooCommerce on my mac as localhost, and the product by category content displayed as expected. Thus, there must be something about customizations to our site that are not playing nice with Woo.)

    The main site is not going to be redesigned before I need to transition our current ecommerce platform, which is third-party developed and hosted running on Drupal 7, which has its End-of-Life coming up. I figured this was a good time to move to Woo so we have more control over the look and functionality of the online shop.

    We are hoping to contract with the designer who set up the current site to see if she can help us to get Woo working on the existing site, but she may not be available. Any advice on how to proceed? I understand that my issues will be difficult to address, given the unique WP environment we are dealing with, but perhaps I’m missing something simple.

    The other thing I am wondering is if a wise approach might be setting up a subdomain with a separate WP installation so I can start with a clean install, and figure out how to duplicate the existing site’s look so that customers have the experience of staying on our site. I don’t even know if that is possible with our hosting service, but it that is the best route, perhaps we need to look at that.

    On a customised theme, and as you have a child setup; first check to see if the function file has any custom written code (extra PHP routines) that may be clashing with categories or otherwise.

    As you mentioned, a mirrored local install on your laptop works ok; It will have a clean function and a clean WPconfig file – Ask yourself are the same plugins installed and configured (mirrored) the same way on the laptop?

    Do you have a maintenance routine to place up while testing or administering your site, that is If you don’t have a staging environment? most hosts now provide this and it’s like what you were referring to as a subsite to test on before releasing to production.

    Mentioning plugins; if they are on your laptop; test your current site and disable plugins in turn to see if there is a change in the product display as you disable them in turn keeping them disabled as you go.

    However, as you know a laptop is not totally reflective compared to a host environment.
    Just to concur it possibly points to the current host environment config.

    If not already done so, this is the first two files to check, if your child function file is empty then your previous site admin may have placed new code in the parent function file. Else also check your WPconfig file at the top most too for anything that may have been disabled or re-defined.

    Plus you would also then need to check your theme customiser to see if it has any settings supporting “wooCommerce” sections on your current theme setup that may be configured adversely.

    Just possibilities to checkout if not already done so while you wait from the woocommerce support team answer or in fact anybody else..

    First and foremost, I recommend we recommend using at least PHP 7.4 or higher now. This is because PHP versions less than 7.3 are at the end of life and are no longer maintained.

    (a) order notification emails are not working and

    Now, for this issue, you’ll want to see if the emails are being correctly generated and sent. You can do this by installing a plugin like WP Mail Logging (https://wordpress.org/plugins/wp-mail-logging/), and placing a test order.

    If they are being generated, then there is a good possibility that the server is blocking them from being sent. I will recommend you to search for a dedicated SMTP Provider as documented here:

    (b) when displaying categories on the main shop page, the products within a chosen category do not display properly.

    In regards to this issue, it sounds like to be a theme/plugin conflict happening on your live site as you were not able to duplicate in on a clean install. So the best way to check for conflicts is to:

    1. Temporarily switch your theme to Storefront theme
    2. Disable all plugins except for WooCommerce
    3. Check if the problem persist

    If you’re not seeing the same problem after completing the conflict test, then you know the problem was with the plugins and/or theme you deactivated.

    To figure out which plugin is causing the problem, reactivate your other plugins one by one, testing after each until you find the one causing conflict. You can find a more detailed explanation on how to do a conflict test here.

    Before you start

    Please make sure you have a good backup in place of your full site and database. If something goes wrong, it’s nice to know that you can restore your site.

    We are hoping to contract with the designer who set up the current site to see if she can help us to get Woo working on the existing site, but she may not be available. Any advice on how to proceed?

    For this, in case the designer is not available, we’d recommend you hire a developer who can take a look at this, quote you for their services and help you add this feature to your site. We’d recommend getting in touch with a web developer or one of the customization experts listed at https://woocommerce.com/customizations/.

    The other thing I am wondering is if a wise approach might be setting up a subdomain with a separate WP installation so I can start with a clean install, and figure out how to duplicate the existing site’s look so that customers have the experience of staying on our site.

    It is always recommended to develop your site in a staging environment instead of building your new site under the main domain and keeping your site offline (maintenance mode). This way, this will not affect your daily visitors or customers. Then, when the site is ready to go live, you just ask your hosting to do it for you, and they will take charge of it.
