As a general rule, adding a widget to a “widget ready” theme, will cause the removal of all “default” sidebar items defined in a themes sidebar. One you have added one widget, you can usually continue to “pick and choose” the rest of the sidebar widgets you wish to include,and add them back into the defined sidebar areas, in any order you like. (I hope that made sense).

my side bar includes links and other subpages on my site …then how do i keep them along with my polls widget?

go to your theme edit section and open the sidebar.php file.
and cut all the widgets codes(widgets which were already there in ur theme) normally it starts like this : <php ?…got it?? and paste it at the end of the file after every closings. Now go to your widget page and add widgets.These added widgets will appear above the theme-widgets.
Thanks sanjaymenon, I was having the exact same proplem – I moved the ‘Pages’ php line above where it had the ‘widgetized’ line and everything is perfect now….
