Adding text and button on top of header image

OK. New here and have tried googling but am not making it all the way. I am working on my localhost and testing my way forward.
I am using the Twenty Twelve theme and have created a child theme. I have moved the navigation up to the top and then have the header image below. I have hidden the site title, etc and have simply a navigational bar on top and an image below.
I have adjusted the navigation bar and image to have width of 100%.
I would like to have some text and then button on top of image (call to action). Unfortunately I do not even know where to start. I would expect that this should be handled within the php.header file within the child theme combined with some css? Just wondering if someone could point me in the right direction here… This is the header.php file as is currently…
