adding slider to the default posts front page

I’ve looked through the forums and can’t find anything that works, I need to add a slider on top of the default latest posts front page, I’ve tried the is_home() and is_front_page() but nothing works, or I could display the posts in a static home page but then the pagination does not work, any ideas? Thank you.
