 * That would depend on what version of WordPress you are running, which theme you
   have chosen, and any plugins in use that may include or modify such functionality.

 * To have featured images in a list of you recent posts in a widget, rather than
   modifying the functionality of the core featured posts widget, you could use 
   a plugin to add a widget that has the required functionality – such as [http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/yd-recent-posts-widget/](http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/yd-recent-posts-widget/)

 * You don’t need to add codes, just install the plugin and add a widget to the 
   sidebar. Or look at the plugin description and view the screenshot.
