I need to add a Google font and I am not at all versed in php. Thank you in advance for any help. The font is Caveat, it is not available in Typography dropdown list.

Try using a plugin like this and let me know if you’re able to get it working that way.

    Hope that helps!

Thanks Kevin. Have you tried that plugin? It is a little different, having to get an API key. And you have to pay for more than one font, though I only need the one.

sunshowerbiz, What version of the theme are you using? you should see Caveat in the theme.

I am on 2.5.7 and I see the latest version is 2.6.7. I need to upgrade but I don’t see the option to upgrade. Now I need to tackle this child theme issue. If I make a child theme, how will it get updated? If I don’t make a child theme I assume all my edits will be lost in the upgrade? I am still a newbie on some issues.

Here is a guide on manually updating the theme if you don’t have a notification in the dashboard area.

    http://www.kadencethemes.com/manually-updating-a-theme/

When you make a child theme, you will still receive the update notification for the parent theme in your admin area.

You will only lose changes to any php (templates, etc…) files you’ve directly edited. You will not lose your theme options settings, or any of the CSS you may have placed in Theme Options> Advanced Settings.

Hope that clears things up for you.

I suppose, maybe Kevin. Do I have to purchase a premium version to get this update manually? It appears so.

And that is odd because I just did a search for Virtue in my Dashboard/Themes/Add new and the 2.6.7 version is available. So if I install that will it override the current virtue version or make a new theme option in my installed themes?

    (@jx-3p)

No, you can download the free one and the same steps will apply.

Thank you Kevin, that solved my font problem and I did a few tweaks to get the site style back that went away (stuff I edited manually in the CSS files.) However, all my widget code is gone as is my sidebar. I backed up the site before doing the upgrade but I will be searching for my widget code unless there is a quick fix for this.
But I am very happy to have the font, it was important to the design.

UPDATE: I reverted back to the 2.5.7 version and my widget code/sidebars/footer are back. And, bonus, i got to keep the Caveat font. But I would like to stay current with the theme version so could you please let me know how/why my widget code disappeared and how to keep it?
    Thank you-
PS I tried to find the widget code in my backup but couldn’t. I backed up wp-admin, wp-includes and wp-content. Is there more?

    Kevin

    (@jx-3p)

Ah I apologize I didn’t consider that you may have code in those areas. If you backed up your site before the change, then you should be able to find it.

I am not entirely sure though so it’s probably best to wait for the theme developer to let us know. I don’t want to risk losing your data if I give you incorrect information.

    Hey,
What do you mean by widget code?

Is this something you’ve added in a widget inside the apperance > widgets page.

If you update and it’s not in one of the widget area the widget with your code would still be in the “inactive” widget areas.

What is the folder name of your theme? If it’s not just “virtue” then this would make some sense as widgets assignments are saved as part of the theme data field.

Hi Kadence-I mean any and all text/code on the widget page. IE, I have a Sidebar Widget. I open the items in it, all happen to be Text items. All were empty. Hence, no more sidebar.

    The theme folder name is
    virtue.2.5.7NewA

I don’t remember renaming it-sounds like something I would be afraid to do. LOL. But anyway it has been named that forever if not always.

Ok, so when you install the latest version you will need to go to apperance > widgets page. Scroll down and on the left you will see “inactive” widgets. Those would need to be moved to the correct widget areas.

I would suggest just installing the theme right from the add new page of themes. Since you current version doesn’t have the correct file name you would be able to have both installed.

OK, to be safe, I backed up my Widget code and copy first. Then proceeded to re-update the theme and just like you said, there they all were in the Inactive Widget area.
    Thanks-
