You can FTP files to your site outside of the Media Library and then just use the URL of the file when you are making a Post. This can be done completely outside the Media Library. The files do not need to be uploaded into the same directory that the Media Library uses. Bit more awkward is all.

Thanks Saildude. I tired that but … I want to set some images as the “Featured Image” (so they show as thumbnails), but using the URL option only seems to allow images to be “inserted into post”. From the Media Library, it allows also “Use as featured image” …
Any ideas ..?
add this line add_theme_support( ‘post-thumbnails’ ); on your theme’s function.php file. Then check it once in admin.

I put it in a few places, but just get error messages on going back to my Dashboard, eg :
Fatal error: Call to undefined function: require_wp_db() in \\winweb\data\Blog\wp-settings.php on line 71
Which version you installed. It will be work for WP 2.9 and greater.
