    try to locate the code in content.php and copy it into content-single.php (untested)

    That worked!

    I picked up this code and placed it in the entry-header before entry-content

    <?php if ( comments_open() && ! post_password_required() ) : ?>
    			<div class="comments-link">
    				<?php comments_popup_link( '<span class="leave-reply">' . __( 'Reply', 'twentyeleven' ) . '</span>', _x( '1', 'comments number', 'twentyeleven' ), _x( '%', 'comments number', 'twentyeleven' ) ); ?>
    			</div>
    			<?php endif; ?>

    Okay, that’s weird. Because if I do exactly that — copy that code from content into content-single, at exactly that location in the HTML, it renders the bubble way the hell above not only entry-content, but way above entry-header as well. (I can’t link the example at the moment because the site is behind a “coming soon” barrier.)
