    Hei,

I’ve tried googling, and searching the forum and knowledge base.

    What happens:

    • I’m writing a new post. Yoast SEO counts the words as I’m typing.
    • Then I add an image.
    • Now the word count stops, now matter how much I type.
    • If I delete the image, the word count starts working again. It also includes a count of everything I’ve written while the word count had been frozen.
    • I can repeat this in different posts.

The image is a .PNG-image. I created it myself with a Windows software called Boxy SVG (I exported a vector image to .PNG). I’ve tested with different exports of .PNG-images that I’ve created. I’ve tried renaming the files before I upload. I’ve had no problems with other images.

Any tips on how I can fix this? Is it a bug?

  • Hi,

We would like some more information.

    1. Can you confirm you are using the most recent Yoast SEO, v12.4? If you update, does the issue resolve?

    2. Can you confirm you are using WordPress 5.2.4? You can check by clicking on the W in the top left and selecting About. If you need to update, please check with your host provider. Please know that if you are using an older version of WordPress Core you may experience unexpected behavior with Yoast. This guide explains more: https://yoast.com/why-we-dont-support-old-wordpress-versions/.

    3. Are all your non-Yoast plugins and themes also updated?

    4. Are you using a pagebuilder like WPBakery, Elementor, SiteOrigin or Divi etc. to create pages? Or just the Gutenberg block editor? Or something different like the Classic Editor?

    Thank you for your reply!

    1. Yes. I’m already using Yoast 12.4. I just double checked.

    2. Yes. I’m already using WordPress 5.2.4. I just double checked.

    3. Yes. All my plugins and themes are updated. I just double checked.

    4. I’m not using any special pagebuilder. I’m using the default Gutenberg block editor. I’m listing all the plugins I have below:

    Admin Cleanup
    Ajax Search Lite
    Akismet Anti-spam
    CodeStyling Localization
Google Analytics for WordPress by MonsterInsights
    Jetpack av WordPress.com
    MailPoet 3 (New)
    Public Post Preview
    [not activated] Relevanssi
    [not activated] Subscribe2
    Top 10
    UpdraftPlus – Sikkerhetskopi/Gjenoppretting
Virkelig Enkel SSL (Really Simple SSL)
    WordPress Popular Posts
    WP-Optimize – Clean, Compress, Cache
    Yoast SEO

    5. New info:

When I open posts I’ve created earlier in the old, classic editor (and used Yoast successfully with earlier), now it suddenly says 0 words.
If I delete all the images in the post, Yoast starts working again.

When I open posts I’ve created earlier, but more recently, in the new, Gutenberg editor (and used Yoast successfully with), Yoast still works! Even though they include images. And even if I add a new image to the posts, Yoast continues to work and count words as I type them.

But Yoast still doesn’t work in any brand new posts I create, after I add an image to the post. It works fine when I start typing, but when I add an image it stops. And it starts working again when I delete it.

We tried reproducing the issue as you described using the Gutenberg editor, but were unable to replicate the problem with the word count not working after inserting an image.

If you have already confirmed that both Yoast SEO and WordPress are up to date and the issue is still occurring, we would next recommend performing a conflict check to determine whether another plugin or theme is interfering with the Yoast plugin. The fastest way to do this is to deactivate all non-Yoast plugins and switch to a standard theme like Twenty Nineteen. Test this on your development or staging site, if you have one. If not, we recommend using the Health Check & Troubleshooting plugin. This plugin allows you to run a conflict check without affecting normal visitors to your site.As we can imagine that you’re unfamiliar with checking for conflicts, we’d like to point you to a step-by-step guide that will walk you through the process: How to check for plugin conflicts.%fillarea:name=Premium may solve issue template:width=30:height=5%

Thank you for your reply, devnihil 🙂

My Canvas theme by Woo Themes seems to be the problem…

The Yoast guide to check for plugin conflicts is excellent. The problem is only there when my theme is activated.

I’ve used this theme for many years, with no problems. So I haven’t given it any thought one way or the other. But now that I google it, I realize that it’s been “closed” since 2017: https://woocommerce.com/posts/saying-goodbye-to-canvas/

I guess that’s it then. I have to find a new theme.
Thank you very much for your help, understanding and good explanations 🙂

I hope you have a good day!
