Adding Adsense ads

i am attempting to ad adsense ads to the blog. I don’t know php but can muddle through some of it and have a very limited understanding of what I am doing. Can anyone direct my to simple but direct instructions on how to add the adsense code to the php template.
I tried adding the adsense deluxe plugin and using that but nothing comes up and i don’t know enough to trouble shoot or recognize what is wrong.
