Support » Installing WordPress » Adding a new domain to WP

  • I already have one domain installed and working for and I am trying to start a new blog so I went and bought another domain and transferred the DNS to my web host etc. but when I try to open the page it won’t work. My web host does allow multiple domains so I know that’s not the issue and the wordpress software is already installed on my FTP program since I have another blog already setup. Is there maybe some settings I need to change so the new domain will work too?

Not sure what to do from here so if anyone could give me a step-by-step guide of exactly how to start a new blog with a new domain name I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance for any help.

  • You have uploaded a new copy of wordpress into the directory where the new domain is aimed?

not sure exactly what you mean by that. When I logged into my Filezilla client and setup a new site in the site manager with my host IP and all that information then hit connect, it showed up as wordpress already being installed. This is probably because there is only one IP I was given and I already do have one blog installed on my computer using wordpress so its still linking to that. I’m new to this whole thing so I have no clue what to do.

You need a separate copy of WordPress installed for each blog you are going to create.

I cannot say for sure how your host works, but you will need to create a new directory/folder in the root of your hosting and aim the new domain at it, then upload a fresh copy of WP there. Then go to

If you have already done all of this and it is still not working then I have misunderstood.

Ok, I haven’t installed a new version of WP yet so that’s gotta be the problem. I use Host Gator as my hosting. Do you have any idea what I would do to set up a new directory folder with them and aim the domain at it?

I have never used HG, though I found this:

You will also need to create a new Database for the new blog. You can do this in your cpanel as well. Then edit the wp-config.php with the new DBs info, upload everything and then go to the install URL. 🙂

More questions just ask!!!! I am off to bed now though so if no one else has helped you by the time I get back online (10am CST or so) I will be glad to answer any other questions you have then. 🙂

great, thanks a lot for your help I will start working on it tomorrow. I am also in CST and its gettin late here haha.
