Adding a link to page header

  • Hello all,
I am new to all of this and was looking into how I could put a link to another page into the header of my site. Here is an example of what I need: http://longhoferlawnandtreecare.com/

The “special Offer” link is what I am trying to accomplish

If you have any ideas please help!

    Thanks

you might need to edit header.php of your theme.

    what theme are you using?

can you post a link to your site?

I am using the Twenty Ten theme
    Here is the link:

Do not edit the theme itself. First create a child theme for your changes.

I have already edited the themes, is this a bad thing?

Yes. All of your changes will be lost when you next update the theme (and you are going to ensure that everything in WordPress stays up to date, aren’t you?). Your options now atr:

    1. Port all of your changes over into a child theme and re-upload a fresh copy of Twenty Ten.

    2. Turn your customised 2010 theme into a new, custom, theme with a new name etc.

editing a theme directly just means that you will never be able to upgrade the theme without loosing your customization.

particular the (former) default theme Twenty Ten will get regularly updated with any new WordPress version, so without a child theme, you might be running into compatibility problems sooner than you would with a child theme and the ability to upgrade the theme.

here is one of my old post about your question (at that time, child themes were not yet strongly recommended)

The only part of the code that was edited was the header.php
Is this going to create continuing problems if I do not create a child’s theme?

    Thanks

It’s easy to make a child theme (just 5 min work). It is recommended to make the child theme, copy your header.php to the child and modify. Otherwise for future upgrades, you would have to take a diff of your original theme changes and apply the patch manually (not to mention resolving conflicts/hunks with your coding changes).

I created a childs theme and I am ready to get the hyperlink going, any suggestions on how to do this?

    Thanks
