adding a 2×2 grid box format in the HTML: use Sidebars?

    I am building a pretty simple WP theme from scratch and would like the home page formst that has header at top, nav bar below, and then 2 square boxes on top of 2 more (2 x 2 box image grid, with rollovers). Do I make these “sidebars”? or just named divs in the HTML?
