Add something to main page…

My website is aboutjourney.org.

I did not create the site–someone was hired to do it, so I have little knowledge about WordPress–just the basics. I can change words, add pictures, add media… all that to the PAGES but I cannot figure out how to do ANYTHING to the main page. I just want to add a simple word that might be at the bottom and it link to a special page for the spring time then take it off after spring.

Any advice? I am willing to take a class if anyone can recommend a good one.
