Support » Fixing WordPress » Add meta description to homepage

  • I don’t use an SEO plugin, but I do want to add a meta description to my homepage because Google is not reading my homepage, therefore not displaying a useful description snippet.

    support.google.com/webmasters says…

    Meta description tags: Google sometimes uses <meta> tag content to generate snippets. High-quality descriptions can be displayed in Google’s search results, and can go a long way to improving the quality and quantity of your search traffic.

    Google understands the following meta tags:
    <meta name=”description” content=”A description of the page” />

    Right now I have this in my header.php…
    <title>
    <?php
    if ( defined(‘WPSEO_VERSION’) ) {
    wp_title(”);
    } else {
    bloginfo(‘name’); ?> <?php wp_title(‘ – ‘, true, ‘left’);
    }
    ?>
    </title>

    Note: I don’t have WP SEO installed so that’s redundant for starters.

    How can I modify above to add in meta name and content tags -only- to my homepage?

    Thanks!
