First of all, have you tried deactivating all plugins and then seeing if the add media works.
If not, also try switching to one of the default themes (2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
If that doesn’t work, we probably need a bit more information, i.e. what theme are you using? when did this problem start? etc

It might be occurring due to some javascripts conflicts or error in the backend.So please check in the browser console using the inspection tool such as firebug to check the js errors.
Also check by deactivating all the plugins and switching the theme to default wordpress theme as mentioned by Ryan.
Ryan, thanks so much. I thought I had deactivated all plug-ins in a test, but this time checked them all and did a bulk deactivate. And it worked! Both Add Media and Insert/Edit began working.
I turned the plug-ins on two at a time and saw some needed updating so I did that as I turned them on, and eventually all are on and the functions work. Seems like updating the plug-ins was critical, I should have done that first.
I am very happy to be past the problem, thanks Ryan and Regan.
When I try to use the add media button nothing happens, no errors show but I still am unable to add anything. I have tried deactivating all of the plug-ins with no success. I did try switching themes from Blakesley to Twenty Fourteen and that seemed to work but my employer wants us to be using Blakesley. Any suggestions on how to make this work? By the way, I have tried this process with Internet Explorer as well as Fire Fox.
Where did you get that theme from? These forums only support themes from here:

So you’ll likely need to ask the developers of the theme for help.
I thought the theme was one offered by word press but if that is not the case, I will see if I can find out where it came from. We have been using it for the last 5 to 6 years.

If it hasn’t been updated in that time, that’s likely why I could not easily find it and why it’s not working…
If that’s the case, you really should think about changing to a theme that’s being updated.
