I have a header category titled Giveaways on my blog http://www.crazy4subscriptionboxes.com/ I want people to be able to click this header link and be taken to my active giveaways. All my giveaways have been assigned the category giveaways. So I created a page titled it giveaways and it does show up in my header. I copied this link into the text portion of the page: http://www.crazy4subscriptionboxes.com/category/giveaways/

The problem is rather than bring readers to the category showing all my giveaways it actually displays the URL name. How can I make it so when people click on this header link they will be brought to see all posts tagged with the giveaways category?

  • That category menu item is a static page – so posts won’t/can’t show up on it unless you use a plugin that puts posts on a static page – here’s one: http://wordpress.org/plugins/posts-in-page/

Or the more usual way – to get a category (posts) page, you need to create a category menu item – http://codex.wordpress.org/Appearance_Menus_Screen#Categories

I am trying the 2nd method you indicate but the link doesn’t actually tell how. Here is what the link says about adding category posts to a menu:

“Categories can also be added to the menu. Three tabs, Most Recent, View All, and Search, determines what categories are displayed for selection as a menu item. The list of categories to select from do not display with any hierarchy, though that may be subject to change in future versions of WordPress. The Checkbox, Select All, and Add to Menu options, describe in the Posts section, are also displayed in this module.”

I looked in the posts section hyperinked in above paste and that didn’t say either. All my giveaways have the category of giveaways. Just trying to find out how to set up a menu to pull all these into the page when someone click the header link.

    Suggestions?

When you are on the Appearance > Menu screen, in the left column, towards the bottom, there is a box “Categories” – in that box is a list of all your categories with check boxes next to them. Check any of them that you want to add to the menu – click “Add to Menu.” That category item then appears in the menu box on the right side. You can drag/drop those menu items in any order you want.

When I go to appearance -> menu all the items on the left are “grayed out” and I see what I posted below on the right side of that screen. So what I did was create a menu titled giveaways and moved the category of giveaways to it as instructed in your last post. This worked perfectly! Just one problem I also need header links for About Me, Contact me and Partner Requests. When I followed the procedure I just described only the giveaways header link shows up. When I am on appearance -> menu I do notice I have the ability to create multiple tabs in the section I just created the custom giveaway menu in. So I followed the same procedure creating a tab for the other 3 header links I want and adding the associated pages to them. When I saved this the only header link to appear is the giveaways link I created earlier. So I am trying to duplicate what I did with the giveaways header link for the other 3 but can’t seem to make them appear at the top of my blog. Hope I am describing this well.

    +
    Menu Name

To create a custom menu, give it a name above and click Create Menu. Then choose items like pages, categories or custom links from the left column to add to this menu.

After you have added your items, drag and drop to put them in the order you want. You can also click each item to reveal additional configuration options.

When you have finished building your custom menu, make sure you click the Save Menu button.

Interestingly when I delete the custom giveaway menu I just created and save my change all 4 header links reappear at the top of my blog (but with the broken giveaways link as before)

Sounds like you should start over with a new menu entirely. To do that click the + tab at the top of the right side box – then give that menu a name (any name – makes no difference at all – it’s not related to what you put in it)

    click create

then on the left under theme locations, select that menu in the pull down

then you should be able to add items from the boxes below, including the categories

One caveat – you may not be able to have a static page and a category with the same name.
