When editing an email in WP HTML Mail you have the option to add Email Variables (typically user fields like firstname, surname, etc). On the drop down for the Email Variables, there is an item called “Custom Elements” with nothing in the list.

How does one add items to this list?

Can you add custom user fields such as those that can be added with a Plugin like “Advanced Custom Fields”?

  • Hello @amgrays
You can register additional checkout fields for WooCommerce. There are some plugins to do this or you can register your fields using actions and filters (see WooCommerce documentation).

    This happens all inside WooCommerce.
Those fields appear automatically in the placeholder list in WP HTML Mail.

“Custom Elements” is not a default entry, so maybe you’ve already customized your checkout?

ACF is not suitable for this situation because it adds meta-fields to any object in WordPress but no form fields to the WooCommerce checkout.
    best regards, Hannes

Wow – under Email Variables drop-down on right-hand half of the edit email screen, I have 4 options: User Tags, Post Tags, Custom Elements, WooCommerce. If “Custom Elements” is not default I wonder where it came from – only possibility is some other plugin as I have not done much else at this point.

    Thanks 🙂

Are you sure you‘re using our plugin WP HTML Mail WooCommerce and you are on Settings->Email Template->WooCommerce?

No – not using WooCommerce – just the WP HTML Mail plugin
No – on Email->Edit Email->(pencil in top right corner)->Email Variables dropdown select in the grey header (with paragraph selector, bold, italic, alignment etc)

Ok so we‘ve found the problem.
If you need the custom checkout fields and far more customization features have a look at this add on: https://codemiq.com/en/plugins/wp-html-mail-woocommerce/
