Add a taxonomy value

This is what I am doing:

I have an artist custom post type and a music custom post type. To tie the music to the artists there is an artist taxonomy in the music post type which holds the id of the artists post. I want to be able to create a new value for the artist taxonomy in music every time a new artist is created so that the user doesn’t have to manually create it. Can I do this?
